ABBA

Postby TheHero » Tue Apr 30, 2013 1:14 pm

ABBA, a Swedish pop group formed in Stockholm in 1972, comprising Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson and Anni-Frid Lyngstad. ABBA is an acronym of the first letters of the band members' first names (Agnetha, Benny, Bjorn and Anni-Frid) and is sometimes stylized as the registered trademark ᗅᗺᗷᗅ.

They became one of the most commercially successful acts in the history of pop music, topping the charts worldwide from 1972 to 1982. They are also known for winning the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest, giving Sweden its first victory in the history of the contest and being the most successful group ever to take part in the contest.

ABBA had sold over 370 million albums and singles worldwide and still sell millions of records a year,[1][2] which makes them one of the best-selling music artists of all time. ABBA was the first pop group to come from a non-English-speaking country that enjoyed consistent success in the charts of English-speaking countries, including the UK, Ireland, the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Philippines and South Africa. The group also enjoyed significant success in Latin American markets, and recorded a collection of their hit songs in Spanish.

The song above (1976) was recorded 4 years before the divorce of Agnetha and Björn.

On 6 July 1971, Ulvaeus married Agnetha Fältskog; the marriage resulted in two children: Linda Elin Ulvaeus (born 23 February 1973), and Peter Christian Ulvaeus (born 4 December 1977). In July 1980, Björn and Agnetha divorced, although they both agreed to remain in ABBA. Ulvaeus then married music journalist Lena Kallersjö on 6 January 1981. This marriage produced another two daughters: Emma (born in 1982) and Anna (born in 1986).

In this clip below, you see Björn bringing her new girlfriend on tour with the band. I can understand that it must have been very uncomfortable for Agnetha to sit in the train watching them toghether. :?

Could this divorce between Agnetha and Björn be the reason why ABBA split up? If so, I can understand why. It must have been painful for Agnetha to work together with her ex-husband.. we can only speculate.

Agnetha was also followed by desperate/maniac fans, and she decided to hide from the public.

Now, here is a rare, fresh interview with Agnetha from 2013:

I'm sure in the cases of both marriages within the band, if the marriage had been more important than the band, then the two couples would have sorted it out. That was a pretty intense ten years or so for all four of them.

From what I can gather, Agnetha's fear of the attention she was getting, got more restrictive as time went on, and is the primary reason the band decided to take a hiatus, which has since become a bit more permanent than being just a "break".

Just the words on your stone.

But forgot how to learn.

Very true what you say, but I think it must have been more difficult to work together after the divorces anyway. The happy times were sort of over. Not to mention traveling on tour together, probably not the same as before.

As you seen in the videos, they they didn't exactly hide their relationships:

Benny played the organ in the wedding of Agnetha and Björn by the way, I think they mentioned that in the interview above from 2013.

Benny Anderson also played in a band called The Hep Stars, and that was when he wrote this song called Wedding:

In the actual wedding of Agnetha and Björn in 1971, Benny performed this song alone, to honor their marriage.

Pictures are from the Wedding of Agnetha and Björn.

great band, pity that the personal problems lead to the end of Abba.
My favourite song by them is Fernando. :)

"I Wonder" is not the most famous song, but very nice. Anni-Frid sings here, listen to her powerful voice!

I dare say Abba is my favorite "pop" band ever...really good stuff in their catalogue.
I once hoped that they would reunite, no longer as the music was a perfect time and place.

Their songs are full of love, real emotions, and honesty.

Yes, and they are all alive. Imagine Abba reunited for a huge concert.
They should do it before it is too late.. and perhaps finally, the World could show them how much they appreciate them. I think ABBA deserve a lot more acknowledge for the wonderful music they created.

Their music is unique. They made real music, catchy songs, but from the heart, and very cleverly produced.

Todays music gives me nothing, no emotions, just sound. I am a fan of Rock music, but ABBA music is good, I believe it brings joy and peace to people.
