Sam Smith

Postby The Milkman » Mon Jun 23, 2014 11:00 pm

What's your take on Sam Smith? The man has some amazing vocal skills and he's starting to catch on here in the U.S.. He even has a top 10 hit this week on the Billboard Hot 100, and his song is number 2 on iTunes right now. Oh yeah, and he's openly gay. :P

69% of the sales are in this week and his debut album has already sold 109,595 copies.

The whole time I was like OK you are trying to hide who you and keep it safe, but then he made me smile at the end. :)

I like him. His voice is cool. I'm glad he's not hiding who he is but I thought the video of Leave Your Lover was somewhat ambiguous and not nearly as overt as some people seem to think it is. Still, it's a step in the right direction and will the ambiguity will make it more digestable to the U.S. audience.

Well it is until the end. That was the cool thing about IMO. It's like a movie with a nice little twist. You would have to be pretty damn dumb to think he's talking about the woman by the end of the video.

EDIT: Especially since he's saying it's about the man in interviews.

"It's about a guy and that's what I wanted people to know – I want to be clear that that's what it's about,"

He's out and he's taking over the U.S.. ;-)

The video is ambiguous and that's good because it makes people think. I like the twist at the end. It reminds me a bit in the movie Valentine's Day where Bradley Cooper has been on a plane all throughout the movie with Julia Roberts and at the end he walks into the home he shares with his boyfriend and strokes his face....God I love that part of the movie...so romantic and unexpected.

taking over the U.S.? that's a bit of an overstatement but he is doing well and that's a great thing. We need more out and proud entertainers in the U.S.

Maybe, but he's getting a shit load of press and his album and single are tearing up the charts right now. Hell, he was on SNL before his debut album was released here in the U.S..

I hope he's getting press more for his music and not for who he sleeps with. The media (and people in general) need to stop treating sexuality like it's a talking point because sometimes that can overshadow the talent.

I heard him a little last night, including most of the above clips I like his music this early on so far a heck of a lot.

I'm listening to the album now and it's a fine album. Nothing original or groundbreaking, but he has a great voice and he writes some really good songs. I'm guessing it will get a Grammy nomination for album of the year because it's solid and it will connect with a lot of people like Adele's album did.

I'm going to keep my eyes peeled for it. I think I would enjoy it.

Not bad for a gay man in a country that is full of homophobes. Seriously, that shit doesn't matter to so many people here in the US. This album is going to be big because it's full of great songs that will connect with many.
