I've often said that I think the general public can be divided into two groups: Those who very sensibly believe that Fairytale Of New York by The Pogues is the greatest Christmas song of all time, and those absolute heathens who think it's All I Want For Christmas Is You, by Mariah Carey. Don't get me wrong, it's a great song, but anyone who thinks it's better then The Pogues needs to have a serious word with themselves.
Then there'll be those who pick a third party candidate to be cool, or because their favourite artist did some obscure Christmas song one year and they want to remind everyone that they like that artist, or perhaps simply because they're weird.
Polls only allow 15 options, so I've selected a few that I think are amongst the most popular. I've included Queen because I feel I probably ought to, but seriously, Thank God It's Christmas isn't even QUEEN's best Christmas Song. Not only is A Winter's Tale better, but Bohemian Rhapsody was Christmas #1 on two separate occasions, so if that doesn't confer honorary Christmas song status, I don't know what does.
Songs I would have included but didn't make the cut:
Nat King Cole, Shakin' Stevens, Mud, Jackson 5. They're all staples, but something had to go. Santa Claus Is Coming To Town is represented by Springsteen.
Songs I refuse to include:
Chris de Burgh - A Spaceman Came Travelling. Just no.
Gary Glitter - is an explanation necessary?
Anything by Cliff fucking Richard - piss off.
And I don't know if Adam Lambert has a Christmas song (I Saw Daddy Wanking Off Santa Claus), but if he does, I'm not including it.
So vote away (pick 3 songs), and if you want to propose an 'Other', vote and then specify in the comments.
