I agree. When I read that the CPR had gone on for 45 minutes, it was obvious that is wasn't one of the reversable rhythms she was in. I guess they did well to keep her going, especially on the plane where space would be limited and they might not have stuff like atropine and adrenaline to hand.

Where did you read 45 minutes? I read 10 and even that is not good.

It was reported 15 on the plane and 30 minutes after the landing via BBC

Ahh, ok. I knew it continued as soon as she was taken off the plane but the sources I read didn't say for how long. Only that it was 10 minutes on the plane and I forget where I read that.

Apparently they do have adrenaline actually! But even so. It doesn't matter how good the CPR was, chances are the underlying cause of the cardiac arrest was irreversible.

That's what I read too. If it went on that long, was there hope of saving her?

Unlikely. In the event of cardiac arrest, the best hope is if the heart can be shocked back into rhythm by defribrillation. Unlike USA medical dramas, this does not work for things like asystole. If CPR want on for 45 minutes, that would not be the case.

Defrilbrillation was used in October of hopes of saving my Uncle's life, didn't work because he was in poor shape even before the heart attack. Even with that, there was an effort to save him.
When it was said Carrie was stable a couple or so days ago, that's what gave me a little hope that she would recover. I know, I know, silly me.

The survival rate of in-hospital cardiac arrest is around 10%. Out of hospital it's less. The ones that survive are the young healthy people who have some weird heart defect (e.g. Fabrice Muamba). If the cardiac arrest is caused by underlying problems, as I'm sure it was in her case, a good outcome is unlikely.

The reality is she probably died a few days ago and they brought a dead Star Wars actor into hospital with a heart that was continuing to beat due to medication. That probably was a 'stable' situation for a while, but not a recoverable one.

Those statistics unsettle me, I had no idea about it. At a very young age, I have already had a stroke, that and my family history means I'm at greater risk for heart issues, which scare me. :(

Well the survival rate should be 0% but fortunately we've managed to get it up to 10%, so there's that.

Apparently Debbie Reynolds has suffered a stroke today.
