Soviet Crooners

There are many reasonable prejudices concerning the former USSR. One thing may be said on this topic: at least after the death of Stalin in 1953 the USSR was not your big North Korea or big Cuba. Another obvious thing: for the overwhelmingly major part, Soviet art was not about The Communist Party. Not in the least.

There were no less than ten famous Soviet crooners. While they used to sing a tune or two of 1917 Bolshevik Revolution, Komsomol (Young Communist League) and dear granpa Lenin - rest tens of tunes were about love, girls, spring, countryside, sailing, respecting the WW2 exploits and veterans.

Let me tell you some words about these men and women, the Soviet crooners.

Let us start with the guy whose name is totally easy to read and pronounce for any English speaker: Mark Bernes (bernEs). A Soviet Jew. A man with a very Western appearance. A person with very little vocal skills and musical theory knowledge. A symbol of its time. Here is the compilation of his greatest hits. They all are in Russian, of course:
