Marc Martel: Article says , he releases Queen EP

Postby Nicki79 » Mon Jul 30, 2018 1:32 pm

There is an interesting article about Marc Martel in the NZ Herald. It appeared there, because of his upcoming tour in New Zealand with his (new) Queen tribute act „Ultimate Queen Experience“. Link: http://www.nzherald.co.nz/entertainment ... d=12096398

What struck me was the news, that he plans to release an EP of him covering Queen songs. Do you think, that’s OK?
Quote from the article: Now, he performs as Mercury for 75 per cent of the year, and he's readying his first official EP of Queen covers.

I know, most fans are completely opposed to the idea of Lambert recording any old songs with Brian and Roger. I‘m OK with that, because a live recording would be completely sufficient IMO. BUT QAL’s versions are at least different from the original recordings with Freddie. They are „modernized“, (that‘s what I would call it): changing up the instruments’ play and parts of the melody (and of course the voice(s). )

Martel plays and sings these songs almost exactly like the old records. So: Is there really a need for a record? And is it decent to do that?

I don't see why not - it's no different to any artist covering Queen's material, plus it makes sense from a business perspective as he's already got a potentially large audience who may buy it.

The issue with QAL is that it would be Roger and Brian rehashing their own material.

No problem whatsoever! I look forward to hearing them. And do you think his Dont stop me now cover was identical to the original version?

Actually his involvement with the Queen movie could be harder to accept for some.

I'll post it for her because I'm sure she's never heard it.

I don't care for covers but this one from the same EP isn't bad. His own take on it as well.

Now this is pretty straight off the record but his voice is amazing!

I'm sure some will be upset over the EP but I see no harm in it.

Thanks for your answers. And thanks for posting Marc’s own version of DSMN. I had seen it some time ago (yes @milkman, I do listen to a lot of different musicians and kinds of music ;) ), but actually I think it’s still pretty close to the original. Much closer than everything QAL does in every case. A release of Marc‘s Interpretations might be interesting for some fans though. For me, it might be too close to the Original and therefore unnecessary.
But you are right: It’s a business.

I see, some clarification from my side is needed. Of course, the arrangement of Martel‘s version is different. He is using different instruments as well. What I meant was, that it still sounds more like the original to me, in the way, that it sounds like a remix. Apparently I cannot distinguish between Freddie’s and Marc‘s voice most of the time.

And for the upcoming movie, that will be a good thing.

Coming 10.26.18
Thunderbolt & Lightning

I knew we had to do something fairly drastic with “Somebody To Love”, because otherwise, why bother?

Why bother to record an album of already recorded popular songs anyway....easy money. ;)
