How feasible is autosave feature for QOL??

Postby Isolde Jane Holland » Sat Apr 07, 2012 2:37 pm

Okay, I'm a complete halfwit when it comes to website design (and many other things) but the next time administrators are discussing possible ways to improve and enhance Queenonline and make it even more user-friendly, could someone suggest adding something similiar to Yahoo Mail's 'auto-save' feature, which with no prompting from the user automatically saves the content of in progress emails to drafts every five minutes??? Whoever invented that feature is a GENIUS. I'll never forget the first time I was typing a loooong email to my friend Meredith, my elbow grazed the wrong key and the whole thing disappeared in a Flash. (Mandatory Queen song mention.) My anguished Sophoclean wail of,"Noooooooo...." could be heard by future generations.

My entreaty was prompted by this post vvvv from my online buddy Bea. Her asiatic posts are one of the joys of QOL for a lot of us, and this has got to be the tenth time this has happened to her.

Bea wrote::onfire: Just written a page and a half reply to Missy's posts and lost the lot. Sod it. Going to sulk now.

I don't claim to be a specialist, but I don't think this would work here.

I'm guessing that when you're referring to an "autosave feature" you're thinking of Gmail. Gmail is a dynamic environment, powered by Java. QOL is a PHP-based static system, powered by a mySQL database. The two things are as different as a diesel-powered car and a Prius.

Do what I do. Get into the habit of (especially when writing lengthy posts) cut'n'pasting your text. It sounds like a lot of work, but trust me - if you use the keyboard shortcuts it's done in seconds. Click Ctrl+A, Ctrl+X and Ctrl+V. That way, even if you lose your reply for some reason it'll be stored in the buffer - unless your computer restarts, that is.

I hope the technical people will prove me wrong, but I really don't think we could have a dynamic feature such as autosave. Bummer.

When you hit the key with your elbow and it erased what you were doing, if you had hit the Ctrl key and the Z key at the same time, it would have come right back. ;-)
Cause you are beautiful
Your scars are beautiful, like the Jade
You'll still shine when you sink into the sea
Where the bleeding scarlet jealousy
Carves away your belief

Thank you, everyone! CTRL + Z, huh?

And yes, I do frequently use both copy/paste AND the save draft feature already on here, when my budding post becomes a crazy quilt of links and urls and other randomness!!

:nervous:

^ ^ ^ Under-utilised smiley. That's how I feel most of the time.
