I'm not sure how to do it either, but it might help.

About a third of my laptop screen is covered in a thick black bar and smaller ones on the right hand side. I can't see anything on that side and the mouse goes 'underneath' the bars. The rest of the screen has gone a lot brighter too, almost pale.

Does anyone know what this could be and how to fix it?

Either a broken screen or the cable between the screen in the motherboard is damaged. One of these need to be replaced.

Thanks for the quick reply. When I stretch the page (I can't maximise the window as the bars cover it) when I let go of the window with the mouse it shows a sort of ripple as if I've pressed onto the screen with my finger but only when I stretch the window to the top of the screen.

Are both scenarios easily fixable? I imagine they'll be costly.

Yeah, easily fixable. Dunno about cost, it depends who you go to! I repair screens for about £85, everything all in, cables perhaps for a bit less depending on how much the part is.

Thanks. I attached a monitor to it and the screen is clear. It's perfectly fine. What could that mean?

Lol, sorry. I asked elsewhere and someone else said it could be the video data cable on the motherboard needs to be fixed. Ah well, thank you for your help. My sister knows someone who could look at it tomorrow. The external monitor is good enough for now. :)

Re: The QOL Technical Support Thread

I'm experiencing a strange problem with watching youtube videos, some work, others don't!! The ones that don't work show up with a black screen with a play button in the middle and when I click on it I get the message *an error occurred, please try again later*, sometimes there's no play button just the message!! In the Hammersmith thread, the videos posted by ExtraordinarilyNice just show up as a black box but the link that dani_ev posted to suz526's channel, some of the videos there work and some don't!! Could it have something to do with add-ons I have on my browser or maybe recent updates, I've tried *system restore* but that doesn't seem to help!! Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated!! :)

Just lately when using Firefox on the laptop, forum posts, blog posts and most bodies of text get clickable links in them that go to advertising pages, and every so often, when I click on a page, or even 'reply post', another tab opens up that goes to a 'fill in our survey and win an ipad' page. Is there anything I can do to stop this, as it's bloody annoying? I don't get this when using Firefox on my main PC.

I think you might have accidentally downloaded something on to the laptop, probably along with something you meant to download. Try going into "add or remove programs" (If your using Windows. Not sure about Macs), sorting the list by date added (that way it'll be near the top), then finding something that looks a bit suspect and removing it :)

Download, install and run a scan with this. Remove any items that are found:
http://filehippo.com/download_malwareby ... i_malware/

Then install and run this, following instructions by the letter. It'll ask you to disable your antivirus software, if you don't know how, don't worry too much, but try if you can:
