Watching an ABBA programme on BBC4. Apparently their highest chart entry was at number 8. Quite amazing for a band that had nine number ones. Cannot remember the song though.

On a quick scan of ABBA #1s, the highest week one placing I could find was The Winner Takes It All at number 10.

I suppose though, it was quite rare for a song to enter the charts in the upper positions in the 1970s.

I think Slade were thw first I heard of, getting to #1 in the same week it was released, ie advance orders.

I would have thought Under Pressure stood the best chance, what with being a non-album single, at the time, and having Mr Bowie on there, but no, #8 in the first week, then onto #1.

What was Paul McCartney's first US solo #1 single? Though never released as a single at the time, in the UK.
