Have decided to cut down my drinking as I know I am drinking too much. However will have a couple tomorrow at my son's graduation ceremony. Otherwise will try and limit drinking to the weekend.
Come on you Tigers.

:bigups: to you.

I cut down for a while, nearly cut it out completely at one point. I think if I could afford to drink these days...I'd be in pretty rough shape, cause to be honest I want/crave drinking more than ever.

No need for the congrats Ice. It's not as if I ever drank much in the first place. Giving up is/was therefore one of the easiest things I have ever done. It's about 0.1% as hard as quitting smoking was. That was really, really hard work.

Well, I didn't really drink earlier, so anything is more than before. :P

I've gotten a habit of social drinking in my new hobby.
1-2 beers during the practice sessions, another 1-2 in the bar afterwards, and 1-2 whenever we have shows.

It doesn't affect the performance (as far as I know), but it does make me think just how easily I've gotten used to it.
There's a real chance of getting addicted if I don't watch myself. :?

Since I wrote here the last time I've been wondering why I drink. :?

I can sort of understand why I would go for a pint with the gang after the practice sessions or gigs, but I'm not sure why I drink during them. I don't think it improves my performance in any way.

I suppose there are multiple smaller reasons, but what it really comes down to is that I don't want to confront the reality. I need to numb myself and try to forget the things I don't like... And it's a really lousy reason to be drinking!

It's crazy, but I always, always used to wake up about 7am on my days off. Not since stopping drinking...now I can't get up, I feel so tired! :P

I never have quite understood the rationale of having a drink if you feel a bit down.

Yep, patently the best thing to have when you're feeling depressed, is a depressant.

You are quite right, it is not the wisest option. However I guess it is easy to see it as the easiest option. Have a few drinks to help forget your troubles. Being honest I have done that but alcohol does not have a depressive effect on me.

When people call it a depressant, they don't mean it makes you depressed. It slows down reactions and cognition, therefore it's classed as a depressant (in the same way that heroin is specifically a respiratory depressant). Alcohol does also act as a serotonin agonist (happy hormone), causes dopamine release (more happy stuff) and increases endorphins (more happy), so the effects it has on mood are complex.

Pharmacology aside, I've always found truth in the rule of thumb that if you're happy, alcohol will make you happier, and if you're sad it will make you sadder.

If you're suppressing a violent personality, it helps bring it out of you.

Must say, I've never known people who get "punchy" on stuff like weed.

quitting entirely? dont see the point. you only live once and if you quit you die anyway.

i drink one or two units a week. that's it. i can massively enjoy it, but that's it.

always need to be on alert, so my consumption doesnt increase. alcohol is really addictive. so you should be sensible and careful.

Yeah, I remember when that Heather Mills woman was accusing Paul McCartney of domestic violence, she said that he often gets violent after smoking weed. Now, I wouldn't wish to speculate on what happened behind closed doors, and certainly wouldn't want to belittle very serious (and unproven) allegations, but as you say, weed doesn't tend to make people violent!

I don't think drink makes anyone violent, per se.

It just relaxes their "normal" ability to suppress something that's already naturally there.

Reminds me of a joke doing the rounds at the time.

This guy working in the gold mines of South Africa, has an industrial accident while down the mines, and gets sent to hospital where they then have to amputate one of his legs. His boss comes to visit him, and the amputee bursts into tears, saying "Who the fuck is going to want a one legged gold digger?"

"Didn't seem to be a problem for Paul McCartney" replied the boss.
